“The exceptional becomes the norm. There are no ideas for preserving the mediocre, the generic.”
While this quote by OMA is a bit of a generalization, I feel like it makes a good point; why do we tend to preserve the exceptional and not the average? When we say that preserving the McDonalds typology is a waste of time, do we really think that is the case? Just because of its prevalence in society today doesn’t mean that McDonalds is not world preserving for the future, does it? What of the symbolism, its cultural relevance is not worth keeping for the future? Likewise, what should we not preserve? Would it be best to create criteria for what we demolish rather than what we preserve?
