Week 5 question

How can we mitigate the preservation of historic architecture with social/cultural preservation needs and/or architectural obsolescence? The Kalven article’s focus on the demolition of Chicago housing towers, as well as the documentary we watched in American Architecture about Pruitt-Igoe, and recent developments in Sharswood have been making me wonder – if a building form (Corbusian-esque housing project tower complex) has been determined unsafe, obsolete, decaying, and yet creates strong community ties for residents – how do we provide better quality housing to those in need while still accounting for their sense of place and community from a former residence?
