Why Do We Build? Why Do We Discard?

The question that I keep stumbling over throughout each of the readings for this week is why, with all of this available data, do people continue to prefer new construction over rehabilitation?  The majority of the time it is more environmentally beneficial to re-use, not to mention the higher level of quality and care that older structures possess usually outweighs new construction.  I would postulate that the decision for new construction lies somewhere between economic and egotistical considerations more so than environmental and cultural considerations.  But how, as preservationists, can we effectively change this tenancy to think with our wallets and self-righteous natures and into the realm of reality?
